Helen concentrates her practice in the areas of general corporate and health care law. She provides a wide variety of corporate and regulatory services to clients. On the corporate side, Helen's practice involves preparing and negotiating agreements; handling purchases/sales of businesses; facilitating entity (including partnership) formation, documentation, and dissolution; and, generally assisting clients with evaluating the legal risks associated with any business decision, and advising them of possible solutions. On the regulatory side, Helen has substantial experience with:
• Federal health care regulations (e.g., Medicare, EMTALA, FDA)
• New Jersey health care regulations (e.g., DHSS, BME)
• Fraud and Abuse
• HIPAA, HITECH, Privacy and Security, and Security Breach Notification Laws
• HIEs, RHIOs, and EHRs
She also regularly advises the firm's clients regarding the Joint Commission's standards, informed consent issues, reporting obligations, and ethical issues. Helen also handles emergency guardianship proceedings.
Helen was the Director of Social Work for the Healthcare and Retirement Corporation in Michigan, where she counseled patients and their families on Medicare and Medicaid coverage issues, assisted her skilled nursing facility prepare for licensing audits, and served on a committee that addressed patient care and safety issues.
As an undergraduate at Rutgers, Helen completed a senior thesis regarding whether individuals with certain personality traits are prone to having health issues. Helen's thesis earned her the coveted “Most Outstanding Student in Psychology” award, which the Rutgers University Department of Psychology grants to only one student each year.
Helen also studied ballet for over fourteen years, and during her college years she was an ensemble performer with a dance troupe based out of New York City called "Syzokrili." With Syzokrili, Helen performed on the prestigious stages of Lincoln Center, Madison Square Garden, and several renowned opera houses in Harkov and Kiev during the troupe's 1992 tour across the Ukraine.
Helen is widely-recognized for her experience with and understanding of laws affecting the use and disclosure of health information, including privacy and security requirements under HIPAA and the HITECH Act. She is the editor for a blog that provides information regarding cutting-edge legal and practical developments that health care providers and businesses must consider with regard to the handling and sharing of health information, including through the use of electronic health records.

Helen has developed numerous assessment tools, checklists, policies and procedures, and other compliance documents for clients. She was instrumental in developing the firm's HIPAA and HITECH compliance forms and training program, which are offered in the HIPAA-Saver PacSM and the HIPAA-Security Saver PacSM in conjunction with 1-hour of training time. Helen is also recognized for creating the New Jersey "State Public Sector Law Review of HIPAA Privacy" and its related "Privacy Crosswalk," which are posted at http://www.state.nj.us/dobi/njhispc.html and utilized by providers across the state.
