For better or for worse, alimony reform has finally come to New Jersey. Many critics of the alimony reform movement say it did not go far enough, while defenders of the prior law say it went too far. All of that aside, now that change is here, what does it all mean?
For starters, certain changes to the law, which went into immediate effect when signed by Gov. Chris Christie on Sept. 10, only apply to ongoing or future divorces, the most significant of which is how the duration of an alimony award is determined. By contrast, substantial changes to the alimony law as to retirement, cohabitation and loss of income, however, apply across the board.
