New Internet Domain Available for U.S. Credit Unions

May 4, 2017Alerts Financial Services Industry Alert

Credit unions in the United States now have access to a new top-level domain – .creditunion – for websites named to match an existing registered trademark.

The “sunrise period” for the new domain runs from May 4 through June 3 on a first-come, first-served basis. Domain names must be an exact match of the credit union’s registered trademarked term in order to be obtained.

Eligibility for the sunrise period is limited to U.S.-based credit unions with federally registered trademarks that have been approved by the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH). The TMCH process takes about five days to complete.

Trademark owners may also elect to wait until the general availability phase to apply. General availability begins at 8 a.m. ET on June 6 on a first-come, first-served basis. Domain names must correspond to a credit union’s name or brand in order to be obtained.
