Many cities and states are pushing convention center projects or related hotel deals in hopes of generating new tax revenue, but are being met with some resistance along the way.

There are ways to attempt to shore up a deal to survive the negotiation and local approval process however, including, being transparent with financing, tailoring projects and incentives to the local market and communicating with stakeholders early on in order to get in front of objections.

“You have to work with the city to make the project work as a whole. A convention center is never just a convention center,” said Michael Kornacki, who noted that hotel, restaurant, entertainment and retail tie-ins must be considered.
