Apple’s Smartphone Wars to Rage on After HTC Deal

Despite the fact that Apple Inc. and HTC Corp. have buried the hatchet in their smartphone patent dispute, many attorneys don’t expect the same quick resolve with Apple’s battle against Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.

While HTC Corp. only commands 4 percent of the smartphone market, Samsung commands 31.1 compared to Apple’s 15 percent. As a bigger market competitor, Apple is less likely to make peace with Samsung.

Christopher Kinkade of Fox Rothschild LLP believes that by putting aside its differences with HTC, Apples is hinting that settlements are possible in the smartphone wars – provided it gets what it wants.

“The settlement shows that Apple wants to get back to business, but it wants to e given its due,” he said. “Apple shows no sign of backing down from its current enforcement efforts without some level of satisfaction that it’s protecting its patent rights.
