The U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act, which has many attorneys weighing in on the decision, saying it is a crucial first step toward gay married couples receiving equal protection under the law and the benefits that come with it.

"In this ruling, the Supreme Court was able to avoid any discussion regarding whether same-sex marriage is a constitutionally protected 'equal protection' right that would apply to all states,” Scott Weston said. “Unfortunately, given that a majority of the states has not approved same-sex marriage, same-sex couples will continue to have to move to states that have approved of same-sex marriage in order to marry and to divorce as well. However, given the decisions of our highest court, the future looks bright for same-sex couples."
