CBS and Paramount have filed lawsuits against the creators of what would have been a crowdfunded Star Trek movie titled, "Axanar." The powerhouse companies are seeking to shut down the prequel to the Star Trek series and collect damages from the crowdfunded title that raised over $ 1 million.
“If it’s based on characters or other protectable elements of the ‘Star Trek’ work, then what they are doing is a derivative work and that’s a copyright infringement that is highly unlikely to be a protected fair use,” said Fox Rothschild's Lincoln Bandlow.
He added: “Just because there are a lot of these fan versions being done doesn’t make it legal.”
