More and more hospitals are looking into co-management agreements, which allow them to pay physicians to run a department and improve its quality and efficiency. Co-management opens a new door to physician-hospital alignment, but hospitals entering into these arrangements need to navigate a fraud-and-abuse minefield.

“Co-management agreements are a hot venture,” says Pittsburgh attorney Bill Maruca, with Fox Rothschild. “Physicians are happy with co-management agreements because they don’t have to sell their souls and become employees. They can remain independent but get their expertise reimbursed."
