The consolidated case in which a group of former technicians brought DirecTV to court, claiming that they were wrongly classified as independent contractors, was recently dismissed in court.
The opinion written by U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz stated that, in the complaint, the group of workers failed to state that DirecTV controlled the hiring and firing process enough to consider it a joint employer with the DirecTV “provider network” employers, which is a requirement of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Several other state-law claims on similar grounds were dismissed by Motz, as well.
Colin D. Dougherty who represented DirecTV in the case said in a statement that, “We are pleased with the court’s order and opinion, and agree with its findings.”
