Retired state Supreme Court Justice Virginia Long will deliver the keynote speech at the Rutgers University Commencement.

Long, who will also received an honorary doctorate at the ceremony, is a Rutgers graduate. She was one of only four women to earn a law degree from Rutgers School of Law Newark in the 125-member class of 1966.

Though Long was offered a $35,000 honorarium to deliver the speech she turned down the money.

“I’m not going to accept it,” Long said. “I’m happy to do this for Rutgers.”

Long said she is reviewing old commencement speeches and preparing to write her remarks.

“I’ve given a lot of speeches in my time, but never before 30,000 people,” she said.

Rutgers’ 247th university commencement is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on May 19 at High Point Solutions Stadium in Piscataway.
