Fox Rothschild Sponsors Environmental Report: “Building Green: Overcoming Barriers in Philadelphia”March 25, 2008
Philadelphia, PA – Fox Rothschild LLP is a sponsor of the “Building Green: Overcoming Barriers in Philadelphia” report, which summarizes one year of research and data collected from focus groups. The report, which was released at a March 11, 2008, event attended and supported by Mayor Michael Nutter, offers policy recommendations for “green” building strategies and sustainability in Philadelphia.
“Fox is proud to be a sponsor of this study reviewing the barriers and solutions to building green in our region,” said Philip L. Hinerman, a partner at Fox and board member of both the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and the Delaware Valley Green Building Council. “Philadelphia is entering a period of great emphasis on sustainable development. The way we develop our city in the next few years is critical to our leaving this city for our children in better shape than we found it.”
Among the many suggestions from the focus groups, the report offered four key policy recommendations:
- Adopt a clear implementation strategy to build only green buildings, and focus on strategies for older buildings to be retrofit in greener ways
- Establish a cabinet-level sustainability position
- Create an expedited permitting system for green buildings as an incentive for the private sector to build using green guidelines
- Educate the public, city employees, policy makers, professionals, unions and other groups regarding the need for green building
Although Philadelphia was ranked the 8th most sustainable city in America by SustainLane US in 2006, the rankings also showed that the city did not rank high in categories such as Air Quality and City Innovation and Green Building and Recycling.
