As data breaches at major retailers continue to grab headlines, consumers have become understandably wary with the holiday season approaching.

Some tips for minimizing exposure to hackers include checking monthly statements, watching for unusual transactions and reviewing your credit report regularly. Consumers should also visit store’s websites directly when shopping online rather than clicking a link and should also avoid storing credit card information.

“There’s a tradeoff of convenience versus good computer hygiene,” said Scott Vernick, a noted privacy attorney.
