Howley Sues Woodcliff Lake Over Denied Indemnification RequestOctober 4, 2011 – In The News
Former Woodcliff Lake councilwoman Joanne Howley has sued the borough and its councilmen for denying her request for the borough to cover her legal fees from an Open Public Records Act lawsuit filed against her in May 2010, totaling $7,695.
In the complaint filed by her lawyer, Ernest Badway, Howley alleges that she was promised to be indemnified if she withdrew her request before the 2010 election, since it would cost the Republican ticket.
Badway said that Howley was legally entitled to indemnification "like any person on the council would be" and that this is unrelated to her criminal case. "The borough is looking at the politics of the situation," he added, and its refusal is "being done for political reasons."
