Innovative, “Bet the Company” Litigator John Shaeffer Joins Fox Rothschild’s Los Angeles Office

April 22, 2015 – Press Releases

Fox Rothschild LLP is pleased to welcome John Shaeffer, known as a hard-driving commercial litigator who crafts innovative legal arguments and has the ability to “think on his feet” in eleventh-hour situations, as a partner in the firm’s Los Angeles office.

Shaeffer brings a diverse, multidisciplinary background to Fox. In addition to his legal training, he holds dual degrees in business and fine arts and credits this background with helping him to see both the “numbers” and “creative” sides of arguments.

“As a first-class litigator of high-profile and complex cases, John broadens Fox’s arsenal of legal talent in California,” noted Darrell D. Miller, managing partner of the firm’s Los Angeles offices. “Adding him to our national litigation team is a real coup as we continue to expand our resources and capabilities to handle high-profile cases in the LA office of Fox Rothschild LLP.”

With a track record of pushing the envelope on interpretation of the law, Shaeffer has been called on from the earliest stages of his career to play lead roles in cases, using his innate ability to quickly identify the central story of his clients’ cases and develop groundbreaking and persuasive arguments to convey these messages, all while thriving in the chaos of contentious litigation.

“As a first-year associate, I had the occasion to take a prominent role in a multibillion-dollar antitrust case involving Southern Pacific Railroad. This was transformative to my career and solidified my preference for significant, intellectually challenging cases that require a particular blend of skills, from telling a client’s story convincingly to improvising when there is a shift in a case,” Shaeffer says. “I am looking forward to benefiting Fox by tapping into my years-long courtroom experience and diverse strengths. It is an honor to be affiliated with a firm that continues to grow its capacity, platform and reach.”

Shaeffer’s courtroom experience includes handling sophisticated, complex and often thorny disputes involving intellectual property, commercial, environmental and antitrust issues across myriad industries, including life sciences, technology, defense, energy and consumer products. His notable cases include litigating environmental and CERCLA clean–up matters in opposition to the U.S. government and handling intellectual property, antitrust and patent disputes for a medical device manufacturer against a subsidiary of an international pharmaceutical and consumer products company.

In addition to managing his demanding practice, Shaeffer teaches New Media Law at Santa Clara School of Law and frequently lectures on various other topics.

Prior to joining Fox, Shaeffer was a partner Lathrop & Gage serving as partner-in-charge of the firm’s Los Angeles office. Before that, he had his own LA-based firm.

Shaeffer earned B.S. degrees in Business Administration and Fine Arts from University of Santa Clara in 1985 and a J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Santa Clara School of Law in 1988.
