John Paul, Former UPMC Executive, Joins Highmark as Consultant

Former University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Executive Vice President John Paul recently joined Highmark Inc. as a consultant.

Among Paul’s biggest achievements at UPMC was successfully negotiating a 10-year provider contract with Highmark in 2002, which included a $520 million deal to buy the former St. Francis Hospital in Lawrenceville and turn it into a new Children’s Hospital. Of that sum, Highmark contributed $250 million in the form of a grant and long-term loan.

“He’s had a baptism by fire,” said Ed Kabala, who has negotiated physician contracts with Paul when he was at UPMC. “He knows the business and second, he’s brilliant. I have a lot of respect for him.”
