Julia Swain of Fox Rothschild Appointed to Serve on Civil Gideon Task Force

Julia Swain, a partner in Fox Rothschild’s Philadelphia office, was recently appointed to serve on the Family Law Working Group of the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Civil Gideon Task Force.

The Civil Gideon Task Force examines the ways in which a right to counsel would attach in certain civil proceedings. The Family Law Working Group’s mission is to investigate and further implement initiatives regarding increasing the right to counsel in certain custody cases.

Swain concentrates her practice in the areas of family law, including divorce, custody, support, equitable distribution and abuse. She also litigates family law cases in the five-county Philadelphia area, including appellate courts and negotiates settlements and prenuptial agreements.

An active member in the Philadelphia Bar Association, Swain is Vice Chair of the Family Law Section and will ascend to chair in 2011; she is a member of its Executive Committee and is the CLE Coordinator. Swain also serves on the board of directors for HIAS & Council Migration Service of Philadelphia.

An avid writer, Swain has been published in the Philadelphia Bar Reporter, The Legal Intelligencer and The Pennsylvania Family Lawyer. In 2009 Swain was elected to the Editorial Board of the Philadelphia Bar Reporter. Swain presents on various family law topics for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute, Gratz College and the People’s Law School.

Swain was the 2009 recipient of the White Hat Award from the Legal Clinic for the Disabled for her outstanding volunteer work and was selected in 2008 as a "Lawyer on the Fast Track" by The Legal Intelligencer and Pennsylvania Law Weekly. Swain was also selected as a “Pennsylvania Rising Star” by Philadelphia Magazine and Law and Politics Magazine in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
