Julia Swain, a partner in the Family Law Practice Group at Fox Rothschild LLP, served as the course planner and moderator for "The Counsel Fees Conundrum - Views from the Bench and Bar," which was presented by the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Family Law Section at the Association’s Bench Bar Conference on Oct. 23 in Atlantic City, NJ.
Joining Swain as panelists at the program were Judge Angeles Roca and Judge Lisette Shirdan-Harris of the Family Division of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, James A. Rocco of Rocco Law Offices LLC and Daniel R. Sulman, Master in Support, Family Division of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. The CLE presentation focused on awards of counsel fees in divorce, custody and support actions.
The Philadelphia Bar Association held its Annual Bench Bar & Conference on Oct. 23-24 at Harrah's Resort Atlantic City. The two-day event included the Association's October Quarterly Meeting and provided attorneys with an opportunity to earn CLE credits while getting a chance to network and socialize with colleagues and members of the judiciary.
In her family law practice at Fox Rothschild, Swain represents clients in matters relating to divorce, custody, support, equitable distribution and abuse. She litigates family law cases in the five-county Philadelphia area, including in appellate courts, and negotiates settlements and prenuptial agreements.
Swain is currently Treasurer of the Family Law Section of the Philadelphia Bar Association. She is also a member of its Executive Committee and is CLE Coordinator. In 2007, was elected Secretary of the Section, which will ultimately result in her ascension to chair in 2011.
Swain is a frequent writer and speaker on family law issues. Her articles have been published in the Philadelphia Bar Reporter, The Legal Intelligencer and The Pennsylvania Family Lawyer. She also contributes to the Fox Rothschild Pennsylvania Family Law Blog (http://pafamilylaw.foxrothschild.com ), which provides readers with information on and insight into Pennsylvania family law issues such as divorce, equitable distribution, alimony, child support, spousal support, alimony pendente lite and custody.
Swain has also served as an instructor of family law for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute, Half Moon Production, Gratz College and The People’s Law School. Swain was a speaker at the Federal Court Immigration Ceremony and was the featured speaker on the cable program “Philadelphia Legal View.” She is the 2009 recipient of the White Hat Award from the Legal Clinic for the Disabled (LCD) for her outstanding volunteer work. In 2008, Swain was named a "Lawyer on the Fast Track" by The Legal Intelligencer and Pennsylvania Law Weekly. She has also been recognized as a “Rising Star” by Philadelphia Magazine in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Swain formerly was associated with several area firms, where she represented clients in domestic relations matters, and was a staff attorney at the Philadelphia Bar Association where she provided advice and information on a broad range of legal matters. She received her J.D. from Widener University School of Law and spent a summer studying at the University of Geneva while in law school. She received her B.A. from the University of Delaware.
