Law Firm Mergers Booming Nationally, Steady Locally

Law firm mergers and acquisitions from January through September of this year were up 79 percent nationally compared to the same nine-month period last year.

Fox Rothschild's addition of the IP boutique Chan Law Group in Los Angeles was the only merger or acquisition to take place within a Pennsylvania law firm in the third-quarter.

Mark Silow said picking up a piece of another firm can sometimes be a larger undertaking than merging with or acquiring an entire firm.

Silow said in some ways the addition of eight construction and government contracting attorneys to its D.C. office from Smith Currie & Hancock was more complex than the addition of the Chan Law Group.

"While it wasn't a merger per se, it was actually a larger transaction for us in that it involved more lawyers and more office space," said Silow.

With the Chan Law Group, the firm simply jumped on the opportunity to supplement its growing IP prosecution and litigation practices as well as its Chinese business.

Fox Rothschild has gained close to 10 boutiques since 2005.

"I agree that a lot of firms are out there again in the marketplace where they may have withdrawn over the last few years," he said.
