Peter J. Tucci and retired professional basketball player Dikembe Mutombo share more in common than just their Georgetown University roots. Ten years ago, Tucci saw Mutombo featured on “60 Minutes” regarding the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, which had a mission to construct a modern hospital for the Congolese people.

Deeply moved by the foundation’s efforts, Tucci requested that guests at his 40th birthday party in 2001 donate money to the foundation rather than spending the money on a birthday present for him. Tucci raised more than $10,000 in funds, which went toward the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital and Research Centre that opened in 2007 in Mutombo’s hometown of Kinshasa. He also provided pro bono legal advice to the foundation in its efforts to get the construction of the medical facility going.

Tucci was recently elected to the board of directors of the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation. The hospital has treated nearly 60,000 patients since its opening in 2007. Tucci and Mutombo continue to connect with each other and bond over their shared Georgetown background.
