Michael Kline commented on Judge Rakoff's ruling Tuesday that confirmed the trial date between Mets Owners Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz and Trustee for the Madoff Victims Irving Picard for March 19.

“This will go right into the throwing out of the first pitch of the season,” said Michael J. Kline. “The Wilpons will be having their personal and financial lives exposed for weeks, while the team plays without some of its key players because of the financial deprivations of the last few years.”

The trial can be seen as a curse or a blessing for the owners, who have said they look forward to vindicating themselves in trial. The risk of losing as much as $386 million would certainly strain the team, which is already millions in debt.

“Time isn’t on the Mets’ side,” Kline said. “What are they going to do, borrow more money from Major League Baseball to pay their legal fees?”
