The state Department of Labor recently posted a long-awaited wage order on workers' tip and pay that largely reflects recommendations issued by former State Labor Commission M. Patricia Smith last fall.

Carolyn Richmond noted the order was critical to the industry and is what everyone has been waiting for since last year. The order, among other things, will allow restaurants more say in how tips are doled out, and many in the industry hope the guidelines will clear up any unclear issues that had fueled litigation against restaurants.
