Bills currently pending in the Pennsylvania House and Senate could make laying off teachers easier for struggling school districts.

Mark Fitzgerald recently spoke to the House committee on education on behalf of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association.

"Even though our schools are facing unprecedented economic issues they can't furlough teachers for that reason," said Fitzgerald. "There needs to be the flexibility to address staffing needs. The other part was to address seniority, to the extent that you are granted a furlough, you have to base it on the last in, first out scenario."

He added that the association considers the economic furlough portion of the bill to be the most important.
