The Palin family lawyer has filed applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office to trademark “Sarah Palin®” and “Bristol Palin®.” Sarah Palin’s name would be a registered trademark for commercial services including informative political medias and educational and entertainment services. Bristol Palin’s name would be a registered trademark for “educational and entertainment services, namely, providing motivational speaking services in the field of life choices.”

Neither application has been approved by the examining attorney yet. Politicians rarely trademark their name but they might do so to prevent others from using it in inappropriate ways. The Palins still have many steps to go through before the trademarks are approved. Jeffrey Kravitz comments on the case, saying, “ Generally one can trademark one’s name, but it’s not easy.”
