Readers See Bias in Us Weekly’s Take on Sarah Palin

Mark McCreary was quoted in the article, “Readers See Bias in Us Weekly's Take on Sarah Palin,” which appeared in the New York Times on September 8, 2008.

The article discusses a recent Us Weekly magazine cover featuring vice presidential nominee, Sarah Palin. Many readers of the magazine – which focuses mostly on celebrity “baby bumps” and families – criticized the cover and the related article, believing that the article on Palin showed bias by the magazine when compared to a more favorable, fluff article on Barack and Michelle Obama’s marriage.

However, readers who turned to USWeekly.com “may have been surprised by the political coverage there,” said the author, since the magazine does not own the site – which is vehemently anti-Obama. Although the magazine attempted to buy the site in 2000, it was not successful.

Said McCreary, “The magazine has ‘no real recourse’ since the USWeekly.com site seems to have been established before Us magazine changed its name to Us Weekly.”
