While West Penn Allegheny Health System has been in court over a dispute with health insurer Highmark Ink, rival University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has been aggressively hiring doctors to increase long-term revenue and stretch its market.

UPMC spent $25 million on new physicians and related expenses alone during the three month period ending September 30. The number of doctors hired in these three months alone is more than half the number of total doctors now employed at WPAHS. The total number of in-house physicians at UPMC is now up to 3,321.

While the Highmark-WPAHS scuffle continues, UPMC has been hiring young doctors just out of school and physicians worried about the uncertainties of the ongoing dispute, according to Edward Kabala, partner and senior health care lawyer at the downtown office of Fox Rotschild LLP.
