Data breaches have the potential to be costly, damage a company’s brand, reduce productivity and harm its competitiveness. But, large companies aren’t the only ones at risk.
Data losses can be even worse for small businesses, which are less likely to devote enough money to cyber security. Many small businesses choose to handle their own IT operations.
According to noted privacy attorney Scott L. Vernick, that’s because a lot of small business try to avoid spending the money, time and energy undergoing necessary means for staying secure.
Vernick noted that company leaders need to comprehend how their businesses work before implementing effective IT security.
Vernick typically asks new clients what data they’re collecting, how long it is stored and who has access to it. He noted, however, “it’s sometimes very hard” for companies to answer these basic questions, which could be a sign the company is heading for trouble.
