The New Medicare Shared Savings Program and Proposed ACO Regulations

William Maruca discusses the proposed rule on Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) and the Medicare Shared Savings Program that was release on March 31, 2011.

The proposed rule on Accountable Care Organizations and the Medicare Shared Savings Program will change an industry that's been watching for these rules ever since the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was signed into law over a year earlier. Shortly after the 60-day comment period closes on June 6, 2011, organizations will know what they willneed to do to qualify as an ACO and share in the savings they achieve through increased coordination of care, and to evaluate whether it will be practical to try to participate in the program.

Under the PPACA, eligible ACOs will qualify for Shared Savings payments under Medicare beginning 2012. Since the act delegated much of the details to the Secretary of Health and Human Services, many critical elements were unknown until the regulatory pacakage was recently released.
