Robert earned combined bachelors and masters degrees from Bucknell University (BS, 1974, cum laude; MS, 1975). He earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from Princeton University in 1979. Thereafter, he worked as a postdoctoral associate at the Agricultural University, Wageningen, the Netherlands (1979) studying macroheterocycle synthesis, which was followed by a postdoctoral appointment at Penn State University (1980-1982), where he studied biological chemistry.
Robert worked as a Discovery Chemist at FMC Corporation, Princeton, NJ, for 24 years (1983-2006), where he lead discovery programs in plant growth regulators, herbicides, and insecticides, involving various enzyme, receptor, and ion channel target sites. His work resulted in 30 patents.
