Ellis represents a wide range of clients in the health care and cannabis industries. His practice also focuses on commercial litigation as well as assisting clients in land use and zoning matters.
Ellis has significant experience in representing large health care institutions in complex business disputes in North Carolina federal, state and business courts. He assists clients with resolving guardianship matters and difficult patient discharges. In addition, Ellis assists long-term care clients with certificates of need and administrative penalty appeals, as well as contractual and extra-contractual matters. He also routinely provides regulatory guidance and strategic counsel to hospitals and long-term care facilities.
Ellis assists clients in navigating the ever-evolving law that governs the cultivation and sale of hemp and marijuana. He provides regulatory guidance to clients on how to legally grow, manufacture, distribute and sell hemp and hemp-derived products such as CBD and Delta-8 isolates. Ellis also assists medicinal and recreational marijuana businesses on licensing, regulatory and transactional matters.
His general litigation practice focuses on the resolution of complex commercial and business disputes in state and federal courts. He has represented clients across the state in contract disputes and tort claims.
Zoning & Land Use
Ellis has assisted commercial developers and nonprofit clients throughout the permitting process including pre-zoning and before local boards. He also provides guidance to clients on ordinance and statutory interpretation.

Ellis was an associate at Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP, which combined with Fox Rothschild in 2018.
While in law school, he served as article & notes editor of the North Carolina Banking Institute Journal and as treasurer of the Carolina Health Law Organization. In college, Ellis was a starting defensive lineman on the football team.
