Managing Environmental Risks During Redevelopment
The environment for redeveloping brownfield sites has become complicated over the past several years by contaminants of emerging concern (ECs) at trace levels in groundwater (such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances [PFAS]) and vapor intrusion (VI). These issues as well as incomplete remediation have the potential to significantly complicate redevelopment of brownfield sites, resulting in significant unanticipated costs. Environmental Liability Transfer (ELT) is one method, among others, that can help manage environmental costs and risks and help transform a property from a stagnant former industrial site to vibrant part of the community. A panel of experts from the remediation, legal and liability transfer industries will provide an evaluation of diligence issues and managing the risks of these new developments, avoiding costs associated with reopening of closed sites, and using ELTs to manage environmental costs.
