Photographer of Melania Trump Asserts Copyright Ownership Against “Make America Awesome”

March 28, 2016 – Press Releases

Fox Rothschild LLP, on behalf of its client, world famous French photographer Antoine Verglas, has demanded the immediate cessation of any use of his Melania Trump photographs used in conjunction with an ad campaign created by the super PAC Make America Awesome.

The images in question are photographs of former model Melania Trump taken by Verglas, a world renowned photographer, as part of a photoshoot for GQ Magazine UK.

According to Fox Partner Leonard N. Budow, “Make America Awesome violated U.S. copyright law by reproducing and modifying the images without Verglas’ consent or authorization. The photographs in question are the sole property of Verglas as they were not part of a work for hire or subject to any creative common license. All rights pertaining to the photographs are held exclusively by Verglas.”

Budow also stated that using these images in a derogatory manner is harming the credibility of his client who does not want to be associated with any political attack on the family members of a candidate.

Now resident in New York, Verglas is known for his documentary-style photography. His work has been featured in many top fashion and lifestyle magazines, including Elle, Esquire, GQ, Maxim, Sports Illustrated and Vogue, among others.

Chair of the firm’s Fashion Law Practice, Budow provides strategic legal and business counseling to a range of domestic and international business enterprises at various stages of growth, including some of the world’s most acclaimed fashion brands.
