With strikes by fast-food workers gaining momentum, many have said that the walkouts are unlikely to produce a large number of new union members but could still advance organized labor’s goals by gaining support for higher wages.

“This is not about organizing, on a micro level, these small workplaces; it’s really about organized labor on a macro level bringing attention to certain issues like the minimum wage or immigration,” said Carolyn Richmond. “It’s the next wave of organizing labor.”
