Fox Rothschild has released a mobile app to provide in-house privacy professionals with easy access to varying state and federal notification laws in the event of a data breach.
Data Breach 411 is designed to help companies suffering from security breaches navigate the 46 state statutes that govern notice and response obligations, said Scott L. Vernick, the app’s co-creator and a noted privacy attorney.
“The point of the app is that it gives in-house counsel, compliance officers and business executives a one-stop-shop to get information to understand their obligations as they go through a data breach investigation and learn more about the incident and develop a response plan,” Vernick said.
“Because there’s not a uniform federal statute, even if the company has been through a data breach before, privacy professionals are always looking for information about the various statutes implicated,” he said. “So with the app, if someone calls with a question, an in-house lawyer can pull up the app without having to go to Westlaw or some other source that’s not as convenient.”
The app is the first of its kind, according to Vernick, who said he is “unaware of anything else like this.”
Vernick, along with Fox partner Mark McCreary, first began work on the app this past fall.
“You just have to read the headlines to understand the prevalence and widespread nature of data breaches,” Vernick said.
The app is available for free in the iTunes Store. To download it, click here.
