West Penn Allegheny Health System took an economic turn for the worse during the three-month period ending Sept. 30, an expensive time for the hospital network. According to Edward Kabala, things aren’t as bleak as they look at West Penn Allegheny. The health system has yet to realize the savings of downsizing Western Pennsylvania Hospital and Allegheny General Hospital’s Suburban campus.

“We’re going to have to wait and see until they get all that under control,” Kabala said. “Like any other entity that’s downsizing, they have all the cost and none of the benefits. It’s grim, but the real question is, can they turn it around?”
