This week senior members of the international flu community are meeting to discuss the evolution of the flu virus and possible vaccines that can be developed to protect people. One issue is that developing counties may not be able to afford costly medications. From this a new discussion has arisen. What if countries most affected by the avian flu develop vaccines and patent the viral isolates that are used to create the vaccines?
