Fox Trio Named to Billboard 2019 Top Lawyers in Music List

August 29, 2019 – Press Releases

Fox Rothschild LLP congratulates Kenneth J. Abdo, Tim Mandelbaum and Michael L. Reinert, who were included in Billboard magazine’s 2019 list of Top Lawyers in Music.

The prestigious annual listing spotlights attorneys who are “on the front lines of the music industry’s legal battles and deals.”

Abdo, based in the firm’s Minneapolis office, has served as legal counsel to artists, creators and businesses in entertainment for more than 30 years. He has continued his mission of protecting and enhancing the value of an artist’s contributions to music and culture through recapture of copyrights; renegotiations with labels and publishers; securing new deals for new products; and legacy estate planning.

Abdo has spent much of the past year on the consolidation and renegotiation of the entire sound recording catalog for Kool & The Gang with Universal, as well as legacy artists and deals for Three Dog Night, TOTO, Roberta Flack, Bill Haley’s estate, HANSON, Jonny Lang and The GRAMMY Museum Foundation, among others. The first attorney to file a Section 203 sound recording termination of copyright grant for the international smash “Funkytown,” Abdo has continued filings and advocacy for many artists over termination of copyrights transfers. He has served on the Recording Academy’s Board of Trustees and is a recipient of the ABA Forum on Entertainment and Sports Industries Ed Rubin Award for his history of leadership and service.

Mandelbaum, former EMI Records Head of Business and Legal affairs, leads Fox’s Music Industry Practice Group from the firm’s New York City office. He provides strategic legal, career and business guidance to a variety of talent and corporate clients in the industry.

Recognized for his experience as a proactive deal broker on behalf of his clients, Mandelbaum has represented numerous top artists and independent labels, including No.1 Chinese crossover artist Kris Wu in his publishing agreement with Universal Music Group; Wu Tang Clan founder RZA in negotiations with Epic Records for the 2019 re-casting of the group’s debut album “Enter the Wu Tang/36 Chambers;” esteemed producer FKi 1st and his label Zooly Records in a joint venture with Republic, the Section 203 Sound Recording filings for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame artist Blondie and Tenth Street Entertainment in connection with the production of the wildly successful Motley Crue biopic, The Dirt. He also serves as a member of the Alliance of Artists and Recording Companies Board of Directors.

A seasoned entertainment executive who also works out of Fox’s New York City office, Reinert represents platinum-selling artists and serves as legal counsel to some of the world’s largest and most legendary recording companies. His client list includes Stevie Wonder, Berry Gordy, Straight No Chaser, Average Joes Entertainment, Hideout Pictures, renowned producer Bob Ezrin, legendary artist and producer Mannie Fresh and Atlantic Records singer songwriter Max Frost, among others.

In the past year, Reinert’s deals have included a wide variety of catalog sales in the U.S. and Europe; agreements for a scripted drama to be developed from a classic ‘70s motion picture; a reality/concept TV show featuring some of the all-time classic hits; and the establishment of a new label featuring unique and groundbreaking artists for a client in the a cappella world. Reinert served 14 years as Executive Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs for the Universal Motown Republic Group and, prior to Universal, was Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs for PolyGram Records. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Entertainment Law Initiative (ELI) of NARAS and received its prestigious ELI Service Award in 2018.

Fox’s nationwide Entertainment & Sports Law Practice consists of more than 30 attorneys who work with celebrated and respected artists, writers, producers and executives including Grammy®, Emmy®, Golden Globe® and Academy Award®-winning stars, as well as music and licensing businesses in television, film and music.
