Attorney performance is increasingly measured by the number of hours billed to client matters, but permanently shackling themselves to their desks isn’t the only way lawyers can meet their annual target.

According to attorneys, five ways for lawyers to hit their billable hours and still enjoy a life outside the office include: understanding the project before billing, giving partners a helping hand, making room for business development, seeking out a physical outlet and getting organized and cutting distractions.

Brett Axelrod, managing partner of Fox Rothschild’s Las Vegas office, suggests that when lawyers bring in a case they should create a list for all the work required and any due dates. “Attorneys first need to get a handle on the case itself and figure out what needs to be done today, what can be pushed aside and what can be delegated down,” she noted.
