Letters: ‘Beachcomber’ Judges Just Doing Their Jobs

January 21, 2011 – In The News

Steven Ludwig comments on a Philadelphia Daily News story from Jan. 17, “From Philly to Virgin Islands: For U.S. District Justices, Temporary Gig a Real Beach,” saying the reporter did “a fine job tracing the quirky fact that the U.S. Virgin Islands are part of the Third Circuit.” Ludwig says this is hardly news as the story indicates, as the islands have been part of the circuit since 1917.

The reporter made clear that sitting as a judge in the USVI is no vacation with the huge workload, managing cases in Philly from afar with no Philly staff. “If you had pictures of a judge in the islands on the taxpayers’ dime ogling beachcombers while scheduled to hear cases, that might be a story,” said Ludwig. “But there was nothing even close.”
