The upcoming U.S. Supreme Court Ruling on the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) could have an immediate impact throughout the Healthcare industry.

William H. Maruca, a member of the Health Law Department at Fox Rothschild LLP, recently spoke to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review about the upcoming decision.

The requirement that all Americans buy insurance is essential for insurers to pay for wider benefits and protections that will take effect in 2014, such as prohibition on denying coverage for pre-existing conditions, Maruca said. Maruca believes that without the mandate providing insurers with millions of new premium-paying customers – especially young customers – the industry could not afford to cover sick people.

“If the individual mandate is struck down but the rest of the law stands, the insurance industry is going to be in pretty serious trouble,” Maruca said.
