Permit Delays Could Put Regional Grid at Risk

Potential power outages in northern New Jersey have prompted energy professionals to blame the congested high-voltage transmission lines and problems with wheeling electricity into the region from the west.

Public Service Electric & Gas has said delays are expected in obtaining environmental permits, preventing it from completing construction of controversial transmission lines. Industry insiders fear this could hinder the reliability of the power grid.

Steven Goldenberg represents the Large Energy Users Coalition and is a frequent critic of PSEG. He felt the reliability problems could begin as early as 2012.
