UPMC Faces Uphill Battle to Improve Image

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s (UPMC) brand image has been a topic of much discussion recently. UPMC, the state’s largest private employer, has been targeted by SEIU Healthcare in a unionization run. UPMC spokespeople have blamed unions for attempting to tarnish the hospital’s image.

Edward J. Kabala, a partner and member of the firm’s Pittsburgh office, believes that UPMC is simply targeted because of its size and that the public has problems accepting the idea that providing medical care is essentially a business.

“People know it’s a business, but they don't want to admit it’s a business,” he told the Pittsburgh Business Times. “People want the world-class health care, but maybe it’s just more show than they want.”
