Connecticut Hospitality Employers – Tipped Minimum Wage To Remain the Same in 2014December 30, 2013 – Alerts Labor & Employment Alert
Over the past several years, in Connecticut, the tipped minimum wage for servers has been 31 percent of the regular minimum wage and for bartenders it has been 11 percent of the regular minimum wage. As such, as we stated in our December 17, 2013, alert, it was assumed that with Connecticut increasing the regular minimum wage from $8.25 to $8.70, the tipped minimum wages would be rising accordingly. However, in a statement just released by the Connecticut Department of Labor on its website, the tipped minimum wage in Connecticut will not change in 2014. Nor will it change in 2015, when Connecticut will raise its minimum wage from $8.70 to $9.00. Instead, for 2014, Connecticut has increased the tip percentage for servers from 31 percent to 34.6 percent and for bartenders from 11 percent to 15.6 percent. In 2015, the tip percentage will increase again to 36.8 percent for servers and 18.5 percent for bartenders. This means that through 2015, the tipped minimum wage will remain $5.69 for servers and $7.34 for bartenders.
