Steve has advised clients in the education and technology sectors in a wide array of business and regulatory matters for more than 20 years.

He is the former president and CEO of ECMC Holdings Corp.—an education-focused private equity investment company; and the former general counsel of ECMC Group, Inc.—a higher education services company. He leverages this experience and perspective in his delivery of targeted and practical legal services. Steve also advises emerging and growth companies on financings, transactions, licensing, IP, governance and regulatory issues and helps boards of directors — including nonprofits — maintain compliance with fiduciary and liability requirements.

Representative Matters

  • Handled more than 100 acquisitions, sales, financings and joint ventures of businesses, including several in the education, SaaS and technology sectors.
  • Negotiated with the U.S. Department of Education on a variety of issues.

Before Fox Rothschild

Prior to joining Fox, Steve was a partner at Oppenheimer Wolff & Donnelly LLP. While attending law school, he was a member of the Order of the Coif and on the board of editors for the Minnesota Law Review.

Beyond Fox Rothschild

Steve co-organizes the Twin Cities Startup Weekend EDU and the Startup Weekend Youth Twin Cities. These events educate participants in how to help solve the education industry’s biggest problems and allow them to network with their colleagues.

Steve is also a judge for the Minnesota Cup competition, a contest that allows emerging Minnesota entrepreneurs and startup companies to compete for the opportunity to meet investors and win prizes, including seed capital.
