25 May, 2018 was an important date in the privacy world. The most comprehensive data protection law, the EU General Data Protection Regulation, was starting to be applicable. GDPR was the outcome of four years of compromise between the EU Member States, however, it promised to boost accountability in dealing with personal data, require privacy by design and ample impact assessments on individuals, and not least threatened enforcement with turnover-based fines. After three years we are looking back at what was achieved, how well did GDPR fare, what has been the impact outside of the European Union, and not least what is in store for the future.
