Democratising distribution redefined modes of music consumption, creating a kaleidoscope of new opportunities for artists and their teams; where even in a market growing in value, territories like MENA and LATAM increased their market share.  As each new channel from artist to audience opens up, we move further from a one-size-fits-all music business model towards a complex mesh of strategies and revenues.  Huge value in a crowded market is generated not only by volume and scale but increasingly by authenticity and engagement.  This series of interconnected talks will zoom in sign-posting specializations and discuss adaptations for the new economy, around:

  • Niche artists are building their own ecosystems around identity while a new generation of superstars from “emerging” markets are selling out arenas worldwide; both cohorts driving the reassessment of terms like crossover, niche, diaspora, genre, community, and marketing agendas.
  • An increase in cross-border styles and deals, brings with it new markets, and money requiring skills to identify and problem-solve challenges such as development and coordination of international/global teams (management, marketing, legal, licensing, data coordination, etc) and cultural competency.
  • Technologies are liberating consumers, bringing richer opportunities for storytelling, breaking down traditional barriers but allowing artists to create their own walled gardens of community and monetisation. In an AI managed post-globalization world, soft skills are increasingly prized: sustainability, equity, art and community have financial outcomes.

As new questions arise, could the music industry have many of the answers?
