Since recreational cannabis was first legalized in Washington and Colorado in 2012, twenty-two more states have legalized its use for recreational purposes. Medical use of cannabis is legal in forty states. The conflict between state and federal law has left the industry struggling to obtain necessary banking services. Existing guidance on servicing this industry presents an opportunity for credit unions to provide these much-needed services and generate fees in the process, in addition to building member relationships. This session will focus on 1.) the business case for a credit union to establish cannabis banking services; and 2.) the regulatory governance and operational issues credit unions must address in order to establish a program to service this growing industry.
