Biography
As a member of the firm’s Tax & Wealth Planning Practice Group, Chantal advises and represents businesses and individuals in a broad range of federal and state tax planning and controversy matters. Her experience includes:
- Business reorganizations
- Private letter rulings
- Section 1031 like-kind exchanges
- Section 1202 qualified small business stock
- Corporate Transparency Act compliance
- California property tax reassessments
- California Franchise Tax Board audits and protests
- Internal Revenue Service audits and protests
- U.S. Tax Court proceedings
- Attorney-client privilege, work product doctrine, and federally authorized tax practitioner privilege issues
Chantal also assists with estate tax and trust matters.
Before Fox Rothschild
Prior to joining Fox Rothschild, Chantal was an in-house tax attorney at Exxon Mobil Corporation where she gained significant experience in state and federal tax planning and controversy, including work on the Motion for Partial Summary Judgment on Penalties in Exxon Mobil Corp. v. United States, 513 F. Supp. 3d 734 (N.D. Tex. 2021).
Chantal also worked as an intern in the Tax Division of the U.S. Department of Justice where she gained experience with renewable energy partnerships and economic substance doctrine. Her experience included drafting motions including the Motion in Limine to Exclude Defendant’s Previously Undisclosed Witnesses from Testifying at Trial in United States v. Jackson, Case No. 3:16-CV-05096-BCW (W.D. Mo. June 14, 2018).
While attending Southwestern Law School, Chantal acted as site coordinator for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Clinic, leading a team of student volunteers to prepare more than 500 tax returns for low-income taxpayers, eventually earning the site the 2016-2017 American Bar Association Law Student Division National Achievement Award.
Beyond Fox Rothschild
Chantal enjoys researching and analyzing technical tax issues involving the intersectionality of tax law and policy, constitutional law, gender, race and sexual orientation. She also uses her experience passing multiple bar exams to mentor and tutor underrepresented law graduates sitting for the bar exam.
