After an 11-week trial, a jury in the Northern District of California acquitted former Autonomy CEO Mike Lynch of all charges centered around an alleged $5 billion accounting fraud at Autonomy before its $11 billion acquisition by Hewlett Packard. The acquittal, which followed a successful Rule 29 motion on a securities fraud charge, was a significant victory in a complex 13-year legal battle involving legal proceedings and witnesses in the UK, a novel securities fraud theory, 34 government trial witnesses, and six defense witnesses including the defendant.
