The Trump administration has announced the creation of a Title IX Special Investigations Team (SIT) to respond to a surge in Title IX complaints and carry out enforcement of several of President Trump’s executive orders.

Announced in an April 4 press release, the SIT is a joint effort of the Departments of Education and Justice. It pulls investigators and attorneys from across both agencies to speed up the resolution of Title IX cases and coordinate enforcement from the outset.

This initiative has a stated goal of ensuring timely resolutions to “protect students, and especially female athletes, from the pernicious effects of gender ideology in school programs and activities.” Officials say the SIT is designed to address lengthy investigation timelines and respond more forcefully to perceived violations of women’s rights in education.

Staffing includes:

• Attorneys and investigators from ED’s Office for Civil Rights
• DOJ Civil Rights Division attorneys
• ED’s Office of General Counsel and Student Privacy and Protection Office

This enforcement push builds on recent executive orders from President Trump, including one opposing “gender ideology extremism” in school settings and another barring male participation in women’s sports.

Taken together, these policy moves signal a clear shift: under this administration, Title IX enforcement will focus more narrowly on protecting sex-based classifications — such as single-sex teams, restrooms, and locker rooms — against what the administration views as erosions tied to gender identity policies.

What this means for schools:

Colleges, universities and K–12 institutions receiving federal funds should prepare for faster-moving, higher-stakes Title IX investigations.

Policies involving athletics, facilities access, and other gender-related issues are likely to come under closer review. Institutions may want to revisit how they define and implement sex-based distinctions, and ensure documentation and training are in place to support their decisions under federal scrutiny.
