Representative Matters

John has been a member of legal teams that:

  • Secured a significant summary judgment victory in the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit for client Rick Ross in a high-profile case involving the permissible use of copyrighted works in the music industry against claims for rights of publicity. Ross (William Leonard Roberts) was sued by 50 Cent (Curtis James Jackson III) for remixing the popular hip hop song "In Da Club" on one of his mixtapes.

  • Obtained a $800,000 judgment for client — including principal, interest, late fees and attorney fees — against a former NBA All-Star for breach of contract, fraud and bad faith due to failure to repay amounts owed under an agreement and promissory note.
  • Closed a Super Bowl brand activation deal with Nike for celebrity photographer and creative Cam Kirk, establishing a "Studio of Dreams" where he could curate unique experiences for Nike's top athletes, celebrities, VIPs and media.
  • Obtained dismissal of breach of contract claim against singer, songwriter and television personality K. Michelle in an action filed in the Circuit Court of Maryland for Baltimore City. Plaintiff had sought $1 million in damages.
